What is laser lipolysis?
A laser light using a glowing optical fiber precisely targets heat energy and melts fat cells (lipolysis). This laser fiber is inserted under the skin through a cannula that is just 1 mm in width (about 1/22nd of an inch). The liquefied fat oils and cellular debris are suctioned off.
How is this different from traditional liposuction?
Traditional liposuction vacuums larger volumes of solid fat through a much wider rigid tube.
You said all Smartlipo™ treatments can be performed under local anesthetic?
Yes, this is true. While traditional liposuction is usually done under general anesthetic, with a Smartlipo™
treatment, you are awake and speaking with me. I may likely even ask you to sit or stand up so I can examine the progress of the procedure.
Then, Smartlipo™ is less painful than traditional liposuction?
Yes, a lot less painful. Because the Smartlipo™ system sculpts and contours the body through localized fat elimination instead of large volume solid fat removal, there is much less trauma, swelling, and destruction of tissue than with traditional liposuction. With Smartlipo™, there is much less bruising and bleeding because the heat energy of the laser coagulates the small blood vessels.
What are the other major differences between the two treatments?
Traditional liposuction frequently leaves skin looking like a deflated balloon, to quote Dr. Bruce Katz, of New York City, who did the first Smartlipo FDA trials in 2006. The heat of the Smartlipo™ laser causes skin tightening and stimulates the formation of collagen and elastin over several months.
The Smartlipo™ system is ideal for treating skin laxity both after a pregnancy, and in other areas, like the neck and face, where little or no fat is removed.
Smartlipo™ also improves the appearance of cellulite by breaking through the fibrous tissue holding small dimpled fat pockets and firming the dermis through collagen formation.
How will I feel after a Smartlipo™ treatment?
You will be back to work in one to 2-days (it takes one to 2-weeks after traditional liposuction). You will need to wear compression garments for a couple of weeks.
How long will my results last?
Melted fat cells are gone forever and do not grow back. Skin tightening and collagen production will continue for up to the next six months--you will continue to look better as the weeks pass.
Will I need stitches, or will I have scars?
Unlike with traditional liposuction, you will need no stitches and experience almost no scarring. Complications after Smartlipo™ are almost unheard of, while traditional liposuction has a complication rate of about 10 % of all procedures.
What parts of the body can be treated with the Smartlipo™ system?
You can receive treatment pretty much anywhere on the body! Smartlipo™ is great for areas that are not conducive to traditional liposuction: the face, neck, arms, knees, ankles, bra fat, love handles, saddle bags, breasts (male and female), hips, inner and outer thighs, and any areas with skin laxity.
Who is the ideal Smartlipo candidate?
Laser lipolysis cannot be used for obesity or for any major weight loss. It is best for patients within 20 pounds of normal body weight with areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. You should have a reasonable body mass index and good overall skin tone. You could have some skin laxity. Most important of all, you should have realistic expectations from a Smartlipo™ treatment.
